Our world is broken.\u00a0\u00a0Oxfam\u00a0reported that the top 26 people in the world own the same amount of wealth as the bottom\u00a0half<\/em>\u00a0of humanity.\u00a0 In this bottom half of humanity, the\u00a0ILO\u00a0cited poor working conditions as a leading issue.\u00a0 And for this bottom half of humanity, these poor working conditions amount to\u00a0modern slavery<\/em>\u00a0for 40.3 million people according to the\u00a0Global Slavery Index.<\/p>\n \n<\/div>\n But this broken world is so far away from my life as a 3rd<\/sup>\u00a0year UoN student.\u00a0 The truth is that I am nowhere near this bottom half of humanity, and in my uni bubble there isn\u2019t much space to think about it. \u00a0I\u2019m not a slaveholder and I\u2019m not responsible for this injustice.\u00a0 And even if I was, these stats are contested, the term modern slavery is criticised anyway\u2026<\/p>\n But what if modern slavery is funding fast fashion?\u00a0 Today I\u2019m wearing a Zara jumper, Topshop jeans and converse.\u00a0 Predictable stuff.\u00a0 But where does all this stuff get made?\u00a0 Or more specifically,\u00a0who\u00a0<\/em>is making my cheap clothes?<\/p>\n The truth is that exploited people living in poverty are making my clothes.\u00a0 From cotton growing to garment manufacturing,\u00a0Know The Origin\u00a0found that human trafficking is prevalent in the world of fast fashion.\u00a0 And it is closer to home than I realised.\u00a0 The\u00a0Financial Times\u00a0found factory workers in Leicester being paid \u00a33 an hour making clothes for New Look and Missguided.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
